i tried surfing for the first time in honolulu last summer. i fell in love with it.
i've been a couple more times. a bunch of my girlfriends and i went to bolinas for a day. then, in january, when i was in kauai, i took another lesson. this time it was private and my instructor and i went to an empty beach. we were the only ones in the water for most of the two hours we spent there. he told me then that i had a good frame for surfing.

after a few months hiatus, i took another lesson in santa cruz with a couple of friends. i reconnected with the ocean and i realized that this was something that i wanted to pursue more seriously. it took me a few months, but i finally got my own board and a rack for my car.

since then, i've been out a couple of times in bolinas and pacifica. i have yet to stand up fully on my board. however, i'm not discouraged. i'll just keep trying.

i also have a trip planned for costa rica at the end of november. i'm looking forward to a week of surfing every day.

the pics from below are from my first time out. i'll update this page again, after i scan in the others and after my trip to costa rica.

rock climbing

in january, i mentioned to sue, a friend from work that i wanted to start climbing. she was excited cuz she had wanted to go back to the sport. we started going to mission cliffs, an indoor space near my house.

initially, we were going about once a week. she commented on how well i was doing for a novice, and i was definitely enjoying it. i haven't been in a few months due to a shoulder injury. however, i'm hoping to get back into it again soon. a few weeks ago, i got some climbing shoes and a chalk bag. now, i'm ready to get serious.
